UNC Asheville rising junior, Keith Hornsby became the 11th Big South Conference basketball player to announce he would be transferring. The 6’4 guard averaged 15 points per game last season and was one of the nation’s top free throw shooters.
Hornsby wanted to explore the possibility of transferring to another school but keep open the option of returning to the Bulldogs next season, however new head coach Nick McDevitt, saying he didn’t want to set a precedent of allowing his players to shop around, wouldn’t agree to that proposal.
“That wouldn’t be in the best interest of Keith, and it wouldn’t be in the best interest of UNC Asheville,” McDevitt said. “He’s a great kid, and we wish him the best.”
Hornsby told me this morning he, “will continue to support Asheville because I love those guys.” He spent Sunday and Monday visiting North Carolina State, but said he has several schools interested in adding him.
Last year, he shot 37.9 percent from beyond the 3-point line (50-of-137) last season and ranked among the top free throw shooters in the country, making 99-of-107 foul shots (.925).
Hornsby had some of his best games against better competition, including 26 points (six 3-pointers) at Ohio State last season and also scored 23 points and made 4-of-6 3-pointers in an 82-80 loss at N.C. State.
“There’s a lot of things I love about Asheville, and that community is close to my heart,” Hornsby said. “It’s unfortunate that the word got out, but these are tremendous opportunities for me, and I want to look into them.”
